How to learn from an employee leaving

People leave your team.

It happens.

The transition period can be awkward, but it can also be enlightening.  I have had a couple people leave since I have been in a management role.  I realized this week, that I had been missing out an opportunity to learn, grow and find gaps.  That the person walking out the door, could provide candid insight that would allow me to make a change that could help me keep more talent.

My company host exit interviews but managers aren't involved.  Yes, I can understand why, but I have never received feedback good or bad once someone leaves.  This week I realized that there is no reason I can't ask the team member questions during the exit interview that I was required to conduct.  I created a quick document with the questions below.  I told the person a couple times that if they don't want to answer, they don't have to.  I think it's very important to preface this.

A couple key things to remember:

  • The person is leaving for a reason.
  • The person's opinion is their opinion and what they view as reality.
  • Actively listen and take notes.  Do not correct if you think they are wrong.  Just listen and keep your thoughts to yourself.  You will learn more my listening
  • Sometimes they are leaving for reasons outside of your control, if that is the case-recognize and move on.
  • If the issue is out of your immediate control but others in the company should be aware of, feed that insight to the correct department / person..
  • Review their feedback objectively - Is their feedback the same view of others on the team? Is there something you can change in your management style?  Is there a training gap?  Culture change needed?

I did a couple quick searches on best questions. I narrowed it down to the following:

1.  What prompted you to start looking?
2.  What is your reason for leaving?
3.  What did you like most about working here?
4.  If you could make any changes, what would you improve about your role? The company?
5. Did you feel you had the tools, resources and working conditions to be successful? If not, which areas can be improved and how?
6.  Anything else to add?

Indeed had a great article on this same topic.  I read this before I went into my meeting, and I used a few of the questions posted.

I hope this helps you gain insight the next time someone leaves your company.

PS- If you know someone that would find this helpful, share it!  The stronger we are as leaders the stronger the team we support.

What's Up Wednesday - 11/29/2023

In my quest to blog more frequently, I am linking up with Shay and Sheaffer on the last Wednesday of the month.  Make sure you check out their blogs as well. I have been reading both of them for years and they are 2 of my favorites.  I love reading blogs and to me it's an escape from reality.  It's like talking to a girlfriend and taking a sneak peek into their lives, closet and home.   I have always wanted to blog.  I typically wrote a post every 6 months so right now I am pretty horrible, and no one reads.  But, in 2024 my goal is consistency.  Stay tuned, maybe someday you will be saying my blog is your favorite.  That would be music to my ears! Here is what we have been up to lately. 1.  Thanksgiving  I sat on the couch at my brother and sister in laws after a wonderful Thanksgiving Day.  It came to me, if you host or cook Thanksgiving, you are truly an angel.  You welcome people into your homes, cook, entertain and ...

January Book Review

Welcome back to our monthly book review. This is the post where I share the books I read last month, rate them and share the jacket summary.  I hope you are able to find a few new books to add to your reading list! However.... This month was a struggle for me.  On average I read about 4-5 books a month.  If I don't like a book, or can't get into it, I stop reading.  Life is too short to read a book that doesn't hold my interest.  That happened more this month than ANY month, in the last 3 years where I have been tracking what I read.  I must have started and stopped 4 books. I just couldn't not get past the first couple chapters.  It was a struggle for sure.   This month, I read a series on Kindle Unlimited that I will only count as 1 book.   I'll explain more below.   The Christmas Retreat By Grace Meyers   My rating: 4/5 My comments:  This was a 6 book series.  The books were about 70 pages long....

Motivational Monday - 4/29/2024

Throw stuff out Organize it Put it away ..... Whatever you need to do. A cluttered house, clutters your mind and it's hard to relax. Do a little something every day.  This also applies to work. Take a look at your desk.   Do you have files everywhere?  Post it's?  Old family pictures?   Now go look at your managers desk (or the person that has the job you are working towards). Does it look the same?   Take 10 minutes to really look at the post its you have around your monitor. Do you still look at them? If not throw it out. If you still think you need them - combine to one sheet and post on your wall or add to OneNote. After a while your mind doesn't see/read them because they are so used to them.  Look at old family pictures... Can you take some home and update with a couple current ones? Can you create a calendar in Shutterfly or Walgreens to display monthly pictures there?  This would allow you to have less family pic...
